Introduction:
Planning a day trip to Naivasha is exciting but knowing what to bring can make the difference between a comfortable, enjoyable experience and an uncomfortable one. Whether you’re heading out for a boat safari, a hike through Hell’s Gate or a full day of both — here’s everything you need to pack to make the most of your day.
1. Comfortable Clothing
Dress light and comfortable. Naivasha weather is generally warm during the day but can be cool in the early morning especially out on the water. A good rule of thumb is to layer up — wear a light jacket or hoodie in the morning that you can take off as the day warms up. Avoid heavy or restrictive clothing and opt for breathable fabrics that allow easy movement especially if you plan to hike or cycle at Hell’s Gate.
2. Closed Shoes or Sneakers
If you’re planning to hike Hell’s Gate or walk on Crescent Island, comfortable closed shoes or sneakers are a must. Avoid flip flops or sandals for hiking as the terrain can be uneven and rocky. For the boat safari however sandals are perfectly fine.
3. Sunscreen
The sun in Naivasha can be surprisingly strong especially out on the open water. Pack a good sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and apply it generously before you head out. Reapply throughout the day especially after being on the boat.
4. A Hat or Cap
A wide brimmed hat or cap will protect your face and neck from the sun during your boat safari and any outdoor activities. It also makes for great photos out on the water!
5. Sunglasses
The glare off the water on a bright day can be intense. A good pair of sunglasses will protect your eyes and help you spot wildlife more clearly across the lake.
6. A Camera or Smartphone
Naivasha is incredibly photogenic — from hippos and fish eagles on the lake to dramatic cliffs at Hell’s Gate and colourful birds along the shore. Make sure your phone or camera is fully charged before you leave and bring a power bank just in case. A zoom lens or a phone with a good camera will help you capture wildlife from a distance.
7. A Power Bank
A full day of photography, Google Maps and social media will drain your battery quickly. Pack a power bank to keep your devices charged throughout the day.
8. Water and Snacks
Stay hydrated throughout the day especially in the heat. Carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person. Healthy snacks like fruits, nuts or energy bars will keep your energy levels up between meals — especially useful if you’re hiking at Hell’s Gate.
9. Cash
While some facilities around Naivasha accept card or M-Pesa, it is always wise to carry cash. You will need it for park entry fees at Hell’s Gate, bicycle rentals, tips for your guide and any small purchases along the way.
Quick reference for fees:
- Hell’s Gate entry — KES 600 (citizens) / USD 26 (non-residents)
- Bicycle rental — approximately KES 600 per person
- Crescent Island entry — approximately USD 25 per person
10. Insect Repellent
Mosquitoes and other insects can be present around the lake especially in the early morning and evening. A good insect repellent will keep you comfortable throughout the day and protect you from bites.
11. A Small Backpack or Daypack
A lightweight backpack is perfect for carrying all your essentials — water, snacks, sunscreen, camera and extra layers. Keep it small and practical so it doesn’t get in the way during activities.
12. A Light Rain Jacket
Naivasha weather can be unpredictable. A light waterproof jacket takes up very little space in your bag but will save you completely if a short shower passes through during your day out.
What You Don’t Need to Bring
- Heavy luggage or large suitcases
